Why do I have a peanut allergy when a peanut isn't a nut?

I have a severe peanut allergy, but I’m also allergic to other nuts (not quite as badly) and I’ve been told to stay away from all of them.

Thing is, a peanut is part of the legume family, and is actually a vegetable. So how come I’m allergic to other nuts too? I thought the two went hand in hand but could it be a coincidence that I’m allergic to peanuts and nuts?
